LASIUS NEONIGER (Cornfield or Labor Day Ants)                                                      $19.00
Difficulty level: beginner (easy)

Food: honey water (50% strength) once a week, supplemented with dead insects (crickets work well).

Hibernation: yes, from approximately late October or November to January or February.
Another of our most commonly seen ants in Canada, this species is known mostly from open areas such as meadows and fields, where they make little volcanic mounds around their entrance hole. The queen of this species hibernates in solitude for her first winter, so you will not see workers until the following spring. This ant is famous for it's behavior in the wild of ranching a particular species of aphid for resources: a very sophisticated behavior unique to some ants.
Queens are 8-9 mm in length and workers are 3-6 mm. Your queen will arrive with no eggs or workers as she does not produce until after her first hibernation. She will be shipped in a secure, standard test tube starter chamber with access to water, a bit of sand, and a removable plug for feeding her. This simulates a founding burrow, and this habitat must be kept dark. She can live in this starter tube for up to 4 months, before which she will need to be moved to a larger formicarium to start her colony.
Your queen will come with detailed care instructions including feeding and husbandry, hibernation, and other rearing advice. We also include a FAQ and a guide to some interesting ant facts for project.
Formicarium sold separately. Feeding bowl and pipette not included.

Cornfield ants cannot be released outdoors.

TETRAMORIUM IMMIGRANS (Pavement Ants)                                                           $19.00

SOLD OUT FOR 2018 - preorders available for 2019
Difficulty level: beginner (easy)

Food: honey water (50% strength) once a week, supplemented with dead insects (crickets work well).

Hibernation: yes, from approximately late October or November to January or February.
One of the most commonly seen urban ants in Canada, these are readily observable in the wild for their habit of forming nests in the exposed places such as the cracks of pavement, in open areas with sand or soil, under stones, and sometimes in rotting wood. They will often have tiny mounds around the entrance hole. These ants grow quickly and can be aggressive: in addition to a general diet of honey-water this species will need supplements of dead insects for food.
Queens are 6-8 mm in length and workers are 1-3 mm. Your queen will arrive with 0-10 eggs and/or workers in the colony, depending on her speed of laying and the length of time since she had her nupital flight.

THE CUBE NEST                                                                                                                 $44.00

Size:  3" x 3" x 3"
Usage: designed as a larger, longer-lasting option for a starter colony. Not connectible but will fit into our larger formicarium for transfer.
Lasts for: Most colonies will outgrow it in 3 years, but the nest can be washed with care and re-used.

Each one of these intricate formicarium is handcrafted and designed for a starter colony's needs by our partners at AntsNational. This size is a little bit bigger than the Dram, meaning it will last a little longer. The small size of this habitat is important: housing ayoung queen in a formicarium that is too large, or too open, will stress her out and may increase mortality rates. The small desgin of the Cube will ensure your ants are healthy, happy and well-housed until the colony outgrows it, which will take around 3 years. At that point you will need to upgrade to a larger size. This nest is not connectible to other sizes because it is too small to be drilled into, but it will fit directly into the big nests for when you are ready to transfer your colony. There is an escape-proof ventilated hole at the top, and this style is compatible with weekly misting or dripping water on the surface. We recommend cleaning this ONLY when it is uninhabited.

Features:
-comes with a Tiny Ant Bowl and pipette for feeding
-secure foraging area at surface
-non-toxic, custom made substrate that both absorbs and holds humidity, and cannot be chewed through (highly secure!). This substrate is the secret to our nest's success! There is nothing else like it on the market.
-ventilated and moisture-retentive throughout: the substrate itself is the humidity stabilizer, compatible with misting once a week to hydrate the ants.
-non-toxic plastic housing will not leach chemicals into your ant habitat
-intricate, appropriately-sized tunnels lined with sand to keep your colony feeling safe and happy
-the nest can also be re-used, should the need arise.

We believe these formicaria to be the best available on the market. Not only are they the most functional, safe, secure, and non-toxic option for your new friends, they also look fantastic!

Have you always wanted to raise ants of your very own? Well, we are pleased to announce that we are officially inviting you to "march with us" into an exciting world of ants!

In addition to beautifully handmade formicarium nests, we offer live queens: not just sterile workers (as is commonly available in Canada). This means that your colony will grow and develop just like a proper ant colony should! All of our Canadian queen ants are ethically sourced around the time of their nuptial flights (during which times, they number in the hundreds of thousands). These nupital flights occur during the spring, summer and early fall, so the ants are seasonal as quantities last.

As always, you can expect the same exceptional level of customer care, quality product, and replacement policy that define all of the living science projects we offer.

Before you buy your ants, it's important to understand:

-Ants cannot be released outside.

-Ant queens have the potential to live decades. This is not a short-term pet! (Luckily, they are in high demand, so there are lots of options for reselling or rehoming your ants).

-Our ants are Canadian species, and will need to be hibernated for 2-3 months a year. This actually works great, because it gives you some time off from being an ant parent.

-We prefer to ship ant orders on Mondays or the first day of the work week, but please inquire about ASAP shipping.
-Your queen will be shipped with the brood she has produced in-season: typically this is 0-5 workers and eggs.
-You queen will be shipped in her own starter test tube, which is kept dark. Any formicarium are shipped empty for the safety of the ants.
-Formicarum sold separately from queens.

THE DRAM NEST                                                                                                               $34.00

Size: Cylindrical tube 3" tall, 2" in diameter
Useage: a starter home for a founding queen. Large species of ants (over 2 cm) will not be compatible.
Lasts for: Most colonies will outgrow it in 1-1.5 years, but the structure can be washed with care and re-used.
